How it works
Rectangle = length × width. Circle = π × radius². Triangle = ½ × base × height. Trapezoid = average of the two parallel sides × height. We add up every area you enter, then convert between units.
| Unit | In square feet |
|---|---|
| 1 square yard | 9 sq ft |
| 1 square metre | 10.764 sq ft |
| 1 acre | 43,560 sq ft |
Measuring tips
- Measure wall to wall at floor level, and round up to the next inch.
- Include closets and alcoves if the flooring goes into them.
- Leave out fixed cabinets, islands and tubs only if the material won’t go under them.
- Convert inches to feet by dividing by 12: 10 ft 6 in is 10.5 ft.

FAQ
How do I calculate square footage?
Measure the length and width in feet and multiply them. A 12 × 15 ft room is 180 sq ft. For odd shapes, split the space into rectangles, work out each one, and add them together.
How do I measure an L-shaped room?
Divide it into two rectangles along an imaginary line. Measure each rectangle, add the two areas together, and don’t count the overlap twice.
How many square feet are in a square yard and an acre?
One square yard is 9 sq ft, one square metre is about 10.76 sq ft, and one acre is 43,560 sq ft.
Should I add extra when buying materials?
Yes. Flooring, tile and sod are usually bought with 5–15% extra for cuts and waste. Our material calculators add this for you.
