How it works
Sod needed = lawn area + extra for cuts. We divide by the roll size (10 sq ft or 1 m²) and the pallet coverage, and round up.
| Lawn size | Rolls (2 × 5 ft, +5%) | Pallets (about 450 sq ft) |
|---|---|---|
| 500 sq ft | 53 | 2 |
| 1,000 sq ft | 105 | 3 |
| 2,000 sq ft | 210 | 5 |
| 5,000 sq ft | 525 | 12 |
Tips
- Prepare the ground first: clear it, add 4–6 in of topsoil, level it and firm it. Our topsoil calculator works out how much.
- Lay the rolls in a brick pattern with tight, staggered joints.
- Water within 30 minutes of laying, and keep it moist for the first two weeks.

FAQ
How much sod is on a pallet?
Usually 400–500 sq ft, depending on the farm and roll size. The calculator assumes about 450 sq ft, so check your supplier's figure.
How big is a roll of sod?
In the US a standard roll (slab) is 2 × 5 ft, which is 10 sq ft. In the UK and Europe, turf rolls are usually 1 m².
How much extra sod should I order?
Add about 5% for a simple rectangle and 10% or more for curved beds, paths and lots of cuts.
How soon do I need to lay sod after delivery?
The same day if you can, and within 24 hours in warm weather. Rolled sod heats up and yellows quickly, so prepare the soil before it arrives.
