How it works
Weight = cross-section area × length × density. The calculator works out the area of the profile you pick, multiplies it by the length, then by the material's density.
| Material | Density (kg/m³) | lb/in³ |
|---|---|---|
| Mild / carbon steel | 7,850 | 0.284 |
| Stainless 304 / 316 | 8,000 | 0.289 |
| Aluminium 6061 | 2,700 | 0.098 |
| Cast iron | 7,200 | 0.260 |
| Copper | 8,960 | 0.324 |
| Brass | 8,500 | 0.307 |
Accuracy notes
- Angle and box tube use sharp corners. Real rolled sections have a root radius, so stock tables can differ by 1–3%.
- Densities vary slightly by alloy. Use your supplier's figure for quotes.
FAQ
How do you calculate the weight of steel?
Multiply the cross-section area by the length to get volume, then multiply by density. Mild steel is about 7,850 kg/m³ (0.2836 lb/in³).
How much does a 1 m² steel plate 10 mm thick weigh?
About 78.5 kg: 1 m × 1 m × 0.01 m × 7,850 kg/m³.
Is aluminium lighter than steel?
Yes. Aluminium 6061 is about 2,700 kg/m³, roughly one third the weight of the same steel part.
